Not exactly your typical cockney “rub-a-dub” (pub), The Marksman Public House in east London redefines the London boozer. Downstairs, it’s all dark wood, beer and atmosphere; upstairs is a quirky and colorful Martino Gamper–designed dining room. Tom Harris and Jon Rotheram, St. John alums, are committed to the modern British manifesto, evidenced by Brixham sole with deviled dulse butter and pigeon or Tamworth sausage with mashed potato. Columbia Road flower market is nearby, so Sundays are fun for brunch or a roast.
